How to Approach Your GP About Perimenopause and Menopause

Many women experience disruptive symptoms of perimenopause - everything from brain fog to poor sleep, body aches, bladder issues, and extreme fatigue (etc ... etc ... etc).

These changes can be distressing, and often my clients don't know where to turn for help. I always recommend they see their GP, but first, it’s important to gather solid information. Educating yourself beforehand will help you walk into that GP appointment with the knowledge you need, plus a clear list of symptoms - when they happen, how often, and how severe they are. This way, you can make the most of your time within your GP appointment and focus on potential tests or treatments.

Good sources for education include evidence-based podcasts, books, and websites. National menopause organisations like the Australian Menopause Society and Women's Health Concern (part of the British Menopause Society) are excellent places to start.

Many of my clients prefer to meet with me first to help them build confidence and understand what they’re facing. This allows them to approach their GP armed with the right knowledge and prepared to ask the important questions, especially around treatments or any underlying causes for their symptoms - things only a doctor can address.

Your GP may ask you to fill out a symptom questionnaire, like the Greene Climacteric Scale, which I’ve attached. It’s a simple way to track the severity of your symptoms, and you can even bring it to your appointment to save time and ensure you address everything that’s important to you.

Even if you’re not looking for medical treatments, I still encourage visiting your GP. Conditions like thyroid issues, B12 or iron deficiencies can sometimes mimic menopause symptoms, and a quick check can provide peace of mind. Plus, getting some blood work done gives you a health baseline as you navigate this life stage.

Whether you decide to explore medical treatments with your GP, or prefer lifestyle changes, I can help create a tailored plan to help you manage your symptoms and feel empowered through this transition. Every baby step counts!
